Maths at Trinity CE VA First School is taught daily across the school (Reception to Year 4). Teachers use the National Curriculum 2014 to ensure they cover the required objectives. They use the Numicon handbook for planning a range of activities with ideas and challenges from other providers.
At Trinity, we use equipment to help children to develop their mathematical understanding. They then use pictorial representations before then using the abstract, (concrete, pictorial and abstract). Children are encouraged to record their working out in different ways and to prove their answers are correct. They also then explain their answers and use this to apply their understanding to solve other similar problems.
Where possible, teachers use cross-curricular links to develop the children’s skills and understanding of maths where the children are able to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding. We also use Active Maths activities.
At Trinity we use ‘My Maths’ which is used at home as home learning activities and within school. Please refer to the maths subject policy for more information.
